Four farmers are appearing in court on murder charges after they allegedly beat two men to death, whom they suspected of a farm attack.

Earlier, both groups attacked one another with rocks and bottles.

The ANC's Thabo Meeko has called for calm.

"We must resist the temptation of any provocation. What we are not going to allow, is for people to make reference of apartheid laws and anything that may invoke any reference of apartheid. Under democracy, everybody is protected."
