Authorities nab heroin mule, make R1m abalone bust
Police have launched an investigation after R1m wort of abalone was seized & a heroin drug mule stopped.
CAPE TOWN - Police have launched an investigation after customs officials seized dried abalone worth R1 million and stopped a woman from smuggling heroin into the country.
The abalone was confiscated at Cape Town International Airport while the drugs were seized at the Beitbridge Border Post in Limpopo on Tuesday.
The dried abalone was hidden in a package, which had been declared as car parts destined for Hong Kong.
Customs officials were alerted to the suspicious consignment by airline staff.
The matter was handed over to police to investigate.
In the second incident at the Beitbridge Border Post, customs officials intercepted a suspected drug mule travelling from the Democratic Republic of Congo with over R300, 000 worth of heroine.
South African Revenue Service officials say the suspect claimed to have been recruited by two other women on Facebook.
She has been taken into custody.
