While the official matric results will only be announced this evening, the minister selected a group of the country's top grade 12 learners to honour, ahead of the unveiling of the pass rate later today.

The department's Elijah Mhlanga said, "There is a learner here who had a very difficult year in 2015. He spent six months out of school and only returned in July. But this learner worked against all odds, to become the country's number one student."

Meanwhile, matriculants in the Western Cape will have to wait a little longer than their counterparts in the rest of the country to get their exam results.

Grade 12s in the province will receive their results tomorrow.

The results will be released at schools across the Western Cape from noon tomorrow, several hours after the rest of the country's matrics have seen theirs.

The department's, Jessica Shelver, explains this is done for several reasons.

"[This] includes giving students the opportunity to examine their results and to pick up on any errors that may have occurred or to alert the [department] of a candidate that may have been disappointed by the results and require counselling."

Shelver says the department has made counsellors available for matriculants who may need support.

MEC Debbie Schafer has appealed to Grade 12s who don't pass, not to lose hope.
