CAPE TOWN - The highly anticipated annual Minstrel Carnival is getting underway in the Mother City.

Hundreds of minstrel troupes will be parading through the streets of the City Centre.

Thousands of Capetonians and holiday makers are braving the heat for the annual Tweede Nuwe Jaar Minstrel Carnival.

The various troupes, dressed in shiny and colourful costumes, begin their march along Keizersgracht Street.

Many spectators arrived early this morning while others have been camping along the minstrel route since yesterday, in a bid to get the best view.

The minstrels will be parading through the Cape Town CBD for most of the afternoon, which will cause various road closures and traffic congestion.

Law enforcement officials can be seen at every corner, keeping a watching eye on the traditional Cape festivities.
