JOHANNESBURG - Cape Town police are requesting public assistance in tracking down a mother suspected of sexually abusing her children.

Shanaaz Shaik went on the run with her three children just before Christmas following a preliminary investigation by social workers.

This came after the police's Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit were alerted to the situation while the suspect was staying at a guest house with her children.

Upon further investigation, social workers allegedly discovered evidence of abuse on the children's bodies.

The police's Frederick van Wyk says a preliminary investigation revealed that the mother was on her way to Durban with her children on Friday, 18 December.

"We're appealing to the public for anyone who knows the whereabouts of Shanaaz Shaik to please contact investigating officer Sergeant Sharon Ephany on 021 467 6002. We are investigating various charges relating to contraventions to the Children's Act."
