CAPE TOWN - Metrorail says an investigation to determine the cause of a fire, which gutted several carriages yesterday, is underway.

Fire-fighters doused the flames that engulfed a passenger train at Cape Town station.

No injuries were reported but five carriages were destroyed.

Metrorail's Riana Scott says this morning's services were not affected.

"The platforms were cleared during the night, and the wreck taken to the depot for further investigation. There was no effect on the service this morning, because we are running our reduced festive season schedule."
