At least 1,000 people homeless after Imizamo Yethu fire

CAPE TOWN - Disaster Risk Management officials have started assessing the damage caused by a fire that ripped through Imizamo Yethu where one life was lost and at least 1,000 people left homeless.

The blaze broke out in the Hout Bay informal settlement last night.

More than 500 shacks were razed to the ground.

Community Leader Kenny Tokwe says residents will be housed in community shelters while officials begin with mop-up operations in the area.

"Many of the people have requested leadership to take a role of monitoring what happens as people will build their houses."
