Shack fire leaves 1 dead in Imizamo Yethu

CAPE TOWN - It has now emerged that one person has been killed in a blaze that broke out in the Imizamo Yethu informal settlement in Hout Bay.

Firefighters are still on the scene, where at least a 1,000 people have been left homeless and over 250 homes destroyed, after the blaze tore through the area overnight.

Imizamo Yethu residents scrambled to save what was left of their belongings. Firefighters traversed the piles of charred rubble to put out burning embers.

This is the second devastating fire to hit the area in six weeks. Officials say around 500 structures were razed to the ground.

At least 1,000 people have been affected.

Firefighters expect to remain on scene for most of the morning.
