CAPE TOWN - More than 150 people have lost their lives on Eastern Cape roads since the beginning of the month.

The provincial transport department says most of the crashes are happening on roads that are being upgraded.

In 2014, the Eastern Cape had 190 road fatalities.

The department's Ncedo Kumbaca said, "We've lost more than 150 people on the Eastern Cape roads. This is a serious concern on our part as government because we want to improve our road safety record. As a result we have intensified our operations, we've tried to rework our plan to look at how best can we respond to this challenge."
