JOHANNESBURG - At least 720 people have been killed on the country's roads since the beginning of the festive season.

Officials from across the country held an urgent meeting in Johannesburg this week to come up with ways to try and reduce road deaths.

Traffic authorities have warned that even harsher measures will be implemented for motorists who break the law in a desperate attempt to end road carnage.

Provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa said, "We also decided that anyone doing 30 kilometres per hour more in a 60 zone and 40 kilometres in excess of 120 zone will be arrested on the spot. There will be a no nonsense approach."
