JOHANNESBURG - After continued pleas from traffic authorities to obey the rules of the road, a man has been arrested for driving 209km per hour on the N1 highway in Pretoria.

The 29-year-old is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates Court today.

He's been charged with reckless and negligent driving.

Gauteng traffic police's Obed Sibasa said, "He has been detained and no bail has been granted. We want to send a strong message to say if you continue breaking the law you will only get bail the day you appear in court."

At least 720 people have been killed on the country's roads since the beginning of the festive season.
