CAPE TOWN - Operation Fiela has gone to malls across the country this festive season.

Police in the Western Cape are out in force at malls in Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha and Somerset West today.

Several armed police officers can be seen walking through Mitchells Plain's Promenade Mall.

Some interact with shoppers, while others are on the lookout for criminals among them.

The mall is jam packed with shoppers, trying to squeeze in last minute Christmas shopping.

Acting provincial police commissioner Thembisile Patekile says officers will be deployed at malls across the province until January.

Patekile says they want to ensure the safety of residents at these complexes during the festive season.
