JOHANNESBURG - Over 1,300 police officers will receive promotions in the New Year following an agreement between the police and union Solidarity.

Acting Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane announced in Pretoria this afternoon that a settlement had been reached.

The promotions had been on hold since March 2013 after numerous court challenges around affirmative action.

Phahlane says the new settlement will also see the officers' salaries being back paid for the past two and half years.

"We have about 802 warrant officers who will become lieutenants. There are 513 captains who will become majors. The total number there is 1,315."
