JOHANNESBURG - The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says motorists should expect a greater police presence on the roads this Christmas weekend.

It says due to the large number of arrests made for reckless driving, police are on high alert and will be deployed across all provincial and national roads.

The corporation says drivers found breaking the law will be severely dealt with.

The RTMC's Makhosini Msibi says reckless drivers and people driving unroadworthy vehicles should expect nothing less than spending Christmas behind bars.

"We're going to be arresting people. Any vehicle that is unroadworthy... we are going to lock up the driver of that vehicle."

He says motorists travelling at excessive speed, drunk driving and the driving of unroadworthy vehicles have been a recurring theme over the past 21 days.

Msibi says traffic police and law enforcement officials will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute those who continue to ignore road rules.
