Matric results to focus on overall performance of pupils
The Basic Education Department is preparing for the release of the 2015 matric results.
CAPE TOWN - Government says the focus on this year's matric results will be on the overall performance of pupils instead of the pass rate.
The Basic Education Department is preparing for the release of the 2015 matric results after at least 800,000 pupils sat for exams.
In previous years, the department relied on the pass rate as a benchmark, but has was heavily criticised with some saying it's not an accurate representation of the performance of pupils.
The department's Elijah Mhlanga says, "We are looking at the performance of provinces in terms of mathematics, English, business studies, physical science and life sciences. So the ranking that you're used to is not going to happen."
Mhlanga says they are also looking at the quality of passes.
"We're going to say this year we were able to produce so many bachelors and they come for the following provinces. We are moving away from looking at pass rates because pass rates have not been telling the whole story."
