Holidaymakers warned not to abuse alcohol, drugs
The police and traffic police say they've adopted a zero tolerance approach this festive season.
PRETORIA - Authorities have warned holidaymakers to enjoy alcohol responsibly and not to abuse drugs as this is a major contributor to crime and the road death toll.
The police, metro and traffic police say they've adopted a zero tolerance approach this festive season.
The police's Vish Naidoo says the abuse of alcohol and drugs remains a major contributor to crime over the holiday period.
"This results in more serious crimes being committed which results in people being reckless on the roads and so forth. To curb this, our approach is multidisciplinary."
Tshwane Metro Police's Isaac Mahamba says their officers will be deployed to the major traffic routes to the city.
"All the vehicles will be stopped and inspected. We'll be focusing on the drivers, checking whether they are fit to be on the road."
Motorists have been urged to inspect their vehicles before embarking on long journeys.
