Muthambi accused of ‘meddling’ in SABC matters
There have been reports of editorial interference and censorship of journalists by the minister.
JOHANNESBURG - The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has raised concerns about what it says is a high level of interference at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) by Communications Minister Faith Muthambi.
There have been reports of editorial interference and censorship of journalists at the public broadcaster by the minister.
Recently, Muthambi has been accused of lashing out at an SABC journalist after he asked a question she found displeasing at a media briefing.
The communications department has denied the minister has been verbally abusive or interfered at the broadcaster.
However the CWU's Aubrey Tshabalala says other journalists have also come forward.
"The level in which the minister is interfering with the broadcaster leaves much to be desired; at the point where she can threaten journalist on [how] they must do their job."
