CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Transport MEC Donald Grant says he's concerned festive season road deaths are up compared to the same period last year. Officials estimate there's been a twelve percent increase.

At least 58 people were killed on the roads in the first two weeks of December.

Grant says there have been several serious and fatal head-on collisions.

"The thing that is really concerning me is the number of pedestrian deaths that have gone up quite substantially. The reason why the stats are up is that we've had some pretty horrific head-on crashes where large numbers of people have died."
