Investigation into Retreat train torching underway

CAPE TOWN - Investigators have not ruled out arson after a train was set alight in Retreat.

At least one carriage was destroyed after the fire broke out yesterday afternoon near a local train station.

Peak hour commuters were sent scrambling after the train burst into flames at Retreat station.

The train, bound for Simonstown, reportedly caught alight shortly after it pulled into platform two.

Trains to the southern suburbs were affected for several hours. The cause of the fire is still unclear.

The incident follows an arson attack on a rush hour train in Muizenberg in October.

Three teenagers were allegedly responsibility for that incident.

No injuries have been reported.
