Gauteng Health explains 'unclean' audit
MEC Qedani Mahlangu says an accrual of payments from previous years is why they didn’t receive a clean audit.
JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Health Department says part of the reason it did not receive a clean audit is because of an accrual of payments from previous years.
MEC Qedani Mahlangu, along with Premier David Makhura, Finance MEC Barbara Creecy and MEC for Roads and Transport Ismail Vadi, were speaking at the f inal executive council meeting for the year in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Mahlangu says in 2010 and 2011, it was not able to pay contractors because funds had been mismanaged.
She says they continue to try and make payments from previous financial years, which puts the department on a back foot.
The MEC says the ongoing battle between the National Health Laboratory Services and the National Health Department adds to the money being wasted.
She says they've the health and finance ministers to intervene.
"To make sure that what NHLS owes us is brought back, because once that money is paid back it will contribute significantly to us."
Mahlangu says she is also dealing with the long waiting times at facilities, and other issues.
