JOHANNESBURG - The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) has welcomed the conviction of three men accused of murdering a senior Gauteng police officer.

Major General Tirhani Maswanganyi was killed in June last year after the trio forced his car off the road.

The men assaulted and strangled him before dumping his half naked body in an open field along the R101 outside Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria.

His killers will be sentenced on Friday.

Popcru president Zizamele Cebekhulu says, "We are one of the parties which are very delighted that justice has been served. The loss of General Maswanganyi is the loss of one of the police officers; an experienced [officer] that we need, more especially in these trying times in South African Police Service."
