JOHANNESBURG - Music fans and the world at large today relived the sadness and shock that broke many hearts 35 years ago when The Beatles' John Lennon was gunned down outside his home in New York.

The then songwriter and activist rose to fame as a member of the long-haired British rock group in the 1960s and would have been 75-years-old this October.

His killer, Mark David Chapman, was later sentenced to 20 years in jail for his murder.

CNN reported Chapman hearing voices when he saw Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, in front of the luxury house.

"When the car pulled up and Yoko got out, something in the back of my mind was going 'Do it, do it, do it'. I stepped off the curb, walked, turned, I took the gun and just boom, boom, boom, boom, boom."

Lennon was rushed to hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival, with doctors saying he suffered several severe wounds to his upper body.

Among some of the hits Lennon was involved in are Imagine, _Woman _and Hey Jude.
