JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tlokwe says with support of the other opposition parties, it's now formally asked the council's speaker to call an official meeting because it holds the majority in the city.

It says it could decide to call for a confidence vote in that meeting.

Last week, the Constitutional Court annulled the results of seven by-elections in the council which means the African National Congress has 22 seats while the DA and other opposition parties together have 23.

The DA's Hans-Jurie Moolman says they also want to use that meeting to reverse a decision to merge with the town of Ventersdorp.

"We are deeply concerned that our municipality won't be able to afford it and we've received information that the total National Treasury has made available for amalgamations is R160 million."
