JOHANNESBURG - Twenty-four of the 40 teenagers reported missing in Orange Farm have been rescued from seven illegal schools and are being reunited with their families.

Over 90 males aged between 10 and 23, have been found around Gauteng in the past week.

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) says it's working to crack down on illegal initiation schools around the province, especially in the Orange Farm area.

Cogta's Nhlakanipho Nkontwana says they are working closely with authorities and community members to find the youngsters who are still missing.

Nkontwana says municipalities and police are assisting in closing down all illegal initiation schools.

"We want to encourage members of the community to report these to the municipalities and the CPFs in the area."

Meanwhile in the Eastern Cape, eight initiates have died from botched procedures in the past week and seven people have been arrested in connection with their deaths so far.
