JOHANNESBURG - Deputy Police Commissioner lieutenant general Nobubele Mbekela and spokesperson Solomon Makgale have now officially been suspended.

They were informed of their suspensions this morning.

Both have come under fire for public statements they've made in defence of embattled National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega.

Mbekela and Makgale were suspended after being served with notices of intention to suspend them last week.

Makgale was grilled by Parliament's Police Portfolio Committee for issuing statements in support of the national commissioner after she was suspended.

Mbekela went on radio to say she unconditionally supported the general.

Both top cops intend bringing an urgent court application to challenge their suspensions.
