CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape High Court has ruled Hlaudi Motsoeneng's appointment as the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC)'s Chief Operating Officer is 'unlawful and irrational'.

Judge Dennis Davis handed down the ruling this morning.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) last month applied to the court to have Motsoeneng's appointment set aside.

This comes after the Public Protector made damning findings against him and after questions were raised around his appointment.

The DA's Phumzile van Damme says, "The DA is obviously quite pleased with the judgment. The court, among other things, found the minister ignored the Public Protector's report and didn't apply her mind. We will study the judgment in detail."
