Taxi passenger dies after brutal assault in Claremont
Carl Schoombie died after he was reportedly dragged out of a taxi & severely beaten last Saturday.
CAPE TOWN - Stellenbosch student Carl Schoombie died in hospital on Wednesday after he was assaulted last Saturday after leaving a Claremont nightclub.
Schoombie and three friends were reportedly driving in an Uber taxi when assailants stopped them.
Schoombie, who was reportedly dragged out of the car by two men and severely beaten, sustained severe head injuries during the assault.
The motive behind the attack is unclear.
A relative of one of the women who was with Schoombie on the night of the assault praised the Uber driver, who was also apparently attacked.
The online ride-hailing service also commended its driver for his bravery during the incident.
Uber's spokesperson Samantha Allenberg says the company will assist police in their investigation wherever necessary.
