From there, a flurry of wickets stopped whatever thoughts South Africa had of making a solid start to the day.
Dean Elgar was the first to fall with the score still on 11, from there Hashim Amla and AB De Villiers were dismissed with the score on 1 before Faf Du Plessis was bowled for 10, leaving the team reeling on 35/6.
Dane Vilas was the next to fall for 1, before Simon Harmer and top scorer JP Duminy were dismissed for 13 and 35 respectively.
Morne Morkel was the last man to fall for 1, bringing the Proteas total to 79, the lowest ever Test score against India.
They still trail by 136 runs.
