JOHANNESBURG - Eyewitness News has learnt that national police spokesperson Lieutenant-General Solomon Makgale has come under fire from Members of Parliament (MPs) for his issuing of statements in defence of embattled National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega.

Phiyega is currently on suspension and is set to face an inquiry into her fitness to hold office.

Makgale was served with a notice of intention to suspend him on Tuesday by Hawks boss, Berning Ntlemeza.

He has seven days to respond.

Makgale is seen as a close ally of suspended general Phiyega and this latest move may be viewed as part of a purge of those loyal to her.

The police spokesperson was heavily criticised by the police portfolio committee for his issuing of statements in defence of Phiyega, but it's understood the report of the portfolio committee on this issue is yet to be completed and the move to suspend Makgale may be premature.

The Hawks have confirmed that the notice has been served on Makgale but it is unclear why this was done by Ntlemeza and not the current acting national commissioner.
