JOHANNESBURG - Waste management company Pikitup has confirmed its workers affiliated to the South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) have gone on strike, which has affected most of its depots in Johannesburg.

Workers went on an unprotected strike on Monday.

It's still unclear what their grievances are.

Pikitup's Jacky Mashapu says they will be meeting with the employees today to try and find out exactly what the issue is.

"These workers have not lodged a dispute with their employer in terms of the protocols of labour relations. We were surprised to be told they'd downed tools."
