CAPE TOWN - More than 100 volunteer firefighters are to be recruited and trained in Cape Town.

It's already been a busy few weeks for fire crews.

Last week, a runaway vegetation blaze gutted several homes in Simon's Town while shack fires have left dozens of people homeless.

The City of Cape Town's JP Smith says 120 seasonal firefighters will be trained up.

"Their main function is to assist professional firefighters with veld and bush fires. In addition to the seasonal staff we also have 35 trained reservists which will complement the more than 800 professional firefighters to deal with all these fires."
