JOHANNESBURG - Ekurhuleni Mayor Mondli Gungubele says his office urgently needs funds to help thousands of people whose homes have been damaged by the recent hailstorms.

Officials are still assessing the severity of the damage, but so far around 5,000 families have been affected.

Gungubele says he's in the process of declaring a local disaster in order to access money to help local residents.

Gungubele says his office simply cannot afford to help the thousands of affected families.

"If we declared it a local disaster, then we will be in the position to assist the 5,000 families."

He says officials have been on the ground helping residents who needed shelter.

"Our teams are on the ground prioritising those houses that have got damaged roofs."

Meanwhile, the South African Weather service says severe storms and rain is expected for the rest of the week.
