JOHANNESBURG - A friendly football match between Germany and the Netherlands has been called off due to what police say are security reasons in Barsinghausen this evening.

The Hanover Stadium in Germany was evacuated a short while ago, less than two hours before kick-off.

It's understood the teams had not arrived at the venue at the time of the evacuation.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and several government ministers were expected to attend the match in solidarity with the French.

The incident comes at a time when countries across Europe are ramping up security in the wake of the terror attacks by the Islamic State in Paris.

This is a developing story, with more to follow.
