JOHANNESBURG - There are reports of a robbery on Jan Smuts Avenue in Rosebank with eyewitnesses claiming criminals with automatic weapons have entered a building.

There is a heavy police presence outside the building, including a helicopter - but details are still unclear.

A who works inside the building says her director came face-to-face with armed robbers when he asked his staff to leave the building.

"One director was held by the gunmen, he was walking past the service lift and they pushed him into it but he managed to get away. He phoned and told us that there are guys in the building with automatic rifles."

A motorist says police asked her to use another route as the road has been blocked off.

"Police cars just stopped in the middle of the intersection, they ran out heavily armed and went into the building at 160 Jan Smuts Avenue."

"They had a struggle with the man inside the lift, maybe they wanted to enter the building to do something, but apparently this man saw them carrying rifles."
