JOHANNESBURG - Two Gauteng police officers are recovering in hospital after they were wounded in a shootout with truck hijackers in Crystal Park on the East Rand this morning.

It's understood the Saps members were tracing the truck when they came under fire.

The police's Lungelo Dlamini said, "There was a shootout between the suspects and the officers. Two of the officers were wounded. They've been taken to the hospital in a stable condition. We recovered the three rifles at the scene. At this stage we are still looking for the suspects."

This brings to at least three the number of police officers wounded this week in the province.

Meanwhile, an off-duty officer was gunned down in Port Elizabeth's Motherwell township yesterday.

It's understood the gunman had been waiting for the 36-year-old officer outside her home in Motherwell.
