JOHANNESBURG - The family of a man killed in what police suspect to be a hit in Mamelodi says the law needs to take its course and the public should not judge him.

Ignatius Selokane was killed in a drive-by shooting on Sunday.

He's alleged to have been the mastermind behind a syndicate responsible for some of the biggest bank robberies in the country.

'Junior 13', as he was popularly known, was expected to appear in court next month on multiple charges.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it has yet to decide whether the case will go ahead without Selokane.

His cousin, Tebogo Selokane, says the public needs to stop labelling him a criminal, because he had not been found guilty of any of the charges against him.

"Junior 13 has never been convicted."

The NPA's Luvuyo Mfaku says the case will continue with other gang members.

"There are three remaining accused who will appear, but the State, now that he is gone, will have to evaluate their case."

Police have not yet made any arrests for the killing.
