City of Joburg blames private contractors for CBD evictions
Around 150 residents called for an end to evictions after a recent spate of inner city evictions.
JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg says it's not involved in decisions over evictions in the CBD, saying the process lies with private contractors.
The city has further denied allegations that it colluded with developers in displacing thousands of people from the Maboneng Precinct in the CBD.
A group of around 150 residents called for an end to evictions after a recent spate of inner city evictions at a summit yesterday.
The city's Nthatisi Modingoane says there needs to be a balance between investment in the city and displacing those living there.
"I'm saying there is no truth in that the city colluded with the developers to mover 20,000 people out of the Maboneng Precinct. What we know is we get to deal with reports of evictions once they have happened."
