Alleged criminal mastermind gunned down in Mamelodi
Ignatius Selokwane was shot dead in a drive-by shooting late last night outside his butchery.
JOHANNESBURG - Police have confirmed the suspected mastermind of a bank robbery and hijacking syndicate has been gunned down in Mamelodi, in a suspected hit.
Ignatius Selokwane, popularly known as 'Junior 13', was shot several times in a drive-by shooting late last night outside his butchery.
He's known on the streets of Mamelodi and is alleged to have been involved in several bank robberies amounting to R60 million in recent years.
It's understood the multimillionaire was the kingpin of one of Pretoria's biggest criminal syndicates which has been operating for several years.
According to police reports, Selokane is alleged to have masterminded one of the most elaborate bank robberies in South African history, in which he made off with over R26 million in cash.
Police say when he was gunned down last night, he was with his friends who managed to escape unharmed.
"The two friends ran away but he was unfortunately hit several times."
Selokwane was arrested 10 years ago by the Organised Crime Unit for corruption and vehicle theft, but was later released.
Questions are now being raised about the exact circumstances surrounding his release.
