CAPE TOWN - Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a student's body being repatriated without a heart.

Zanele Moyo, the daughter of Zimbabwean government minister Jonathan Moyo, died in her Cape Town apartment last month.

Her family reportedly discovered her heart had been removed when a second autopsy was carried out in Zimbabwe.

Forensic expert Stan Bezuidenhout says organs are often removed for further analysis.

"In order for one to understand whether this is normal or abnormal, the question would be when the second post mortem was done, whether the other organs were found to be previously removed and returned. And whether all other organs were in fact intact and only the heart was missing. If only the heart was missing, and there was no interference with any other organs, that would be very abnormal."

The family has since logged a formal complaint with South African government as well as the Western Cape Health Department.

Moyo was a second-year student at UCT majoring in political science, international relations and gender studies.
