JOHANNESBURG - The ANC says it welcomes Sihle Zikalala's appointment as the new chairperson of its KwaZulu-Natal branch.

Zikalala received 789 votes out of a total of 1459.

Willies Mchunu received 675 votes and will serve as his deputy.

Super Zuma has been elected secretary of the party's provincial branch.

Mluleki Ndobe is the new deputy secretary and Nomusa Dube-Ncube has been elected as party treasurer.

The ANC's Keith Khoza says, "The ANC at this stage welcomes the outcome as assured by the electoral commission that the elections were free and fair."

On Saturday, President Jacob Zuma urged delegates to accept whatever the outcome is of the provincial conference.

Voting got off to a rocky start in Pietermaritzburg yesterday with the process marred by many contesting vote counts with an independent election agency recounting the ballots.
