JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress chairperson and Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete has described Chumani Nqakula as a blessing to his family emphasising the importance of knowing your children.

Mbete read a message on behalf of Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and her husband Charles at a service held in Bruma earlier today.

The 23-year-old was stabbed in the chest last weekend by someone believed to be his friend.

She told mourners that doctors have informed the family that Chumani died instantly and it was painless.

The Speaker of Parliament says it's important to appreciate loved ones before it's too late.

"We should be grateful that Chumani touched our lives and he was the kind of wonderful child that he was."

Twenty-four-year-old Carlos Higuera allegedly stabbed him at a house in Bezuidenhout Valley last weekend.

Nqakula will be buried at the Westpark Cemetery this afternoon.
