UWC students welcome late-night deal with management
University officials have resolved to address issues of outstanding debt, academic exclusion & outsourcing.
CAPE TOWN - Protesting students from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) have welcomed the late-night deal struck with the institution's management.
University officials have resolved to address issues of outstanding debt, academic exclusion and outsourcing.
Student leader Akhona Landu says, "It's a victory in terms of assisting students. The decisions that we made in those meetings were based on ensuring that we find the best possible solutions so the university becomes a conducive environment."
Meanwhile, government says it still needs time to come up with almost R3 billion needed to fund universities following a freeze on tuition fee hikes.
The department's Khaye Nkwanyana says, "We're looking at around R2.7 billion across the entire university system. That's the money that was going to be generated by all these different percentage increases."
