CAPE TOWN - Eyewitness News has learnt a Parow man has been arrested for possession of child pornography.

The police's Heila Niemand says the 34-year-old security guard from Parow was detained yesterday during a raid at his home.

She says they found more than 200 pictures and about 70 videos of children being sexually assaulted.

The man will appear in the Bellville Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Niemand says the suspect's arrest forms part of a broader investigation into child porn syndicates.

This is a separate probe from the so-called Cloud Nine operation, which has seen numerous arrests across the country and abroad of people implicated in the possession and distribution of child pornography.

Meanwhile, in a separate case, a Fishhoek resident also arrested for child porn-related offences appeared in the Simons Town Magistrates Court today.

During his brief appearance, the State indicated forensic analysis was not ready yet. The case has been postponed to 24 February for further investigation.

Defence attorney William Booth has asked that the three-month postponement be marked as final.

The 45-year-old man was arrested in September and has been charged with being in possession of and distributing child pornography.

He was arrested as part of an international child porn ring investigation. The accused covered his face with a black hooded top to avoid being photographed by the media as he left the courtroom.

The accused remains out on bail of R5,000.

Fifteen people have been detained on similar charges in other countries since the start of the investigation.
