CAPE TOWN - The Krugersdorp police station commander is in hot water after officers from that station were implicated in the alleged execution-style murder of a suspected armed robber.

Acting national police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane told members of Parliament (MPs) today the commander has been served with a notice of suspension.

A video of the shooting surfaced online, the details of which were published in this weekend's Sunday Times.

Officials from the South African Police Services and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate were asked to brief Parliament's police portfolio committee on the incident today.

Phahlane told MPs the initial lack of action against the four officers involved in the incident was concerning.

"The intended suspension of the station commissioner is informed by the fact that he or she would have received that information much earlier, before we saw it in the newspapers."

Suspected armed robber Khulekani Mpanza was shot dead just over two weeks ago after he had allegedly robbed a store and fired shots at the officers pursuing him.

The four officers were arrested on Monday.
