10 things you didn’t know about Cassper Nyovest
Random facts about Cassper Nyovest that may make you feel like you know him... just a little better.
JOHANNESBURG - Refiloe Maele Phoolo, popularly known as Cassper Nyovest, has never been shy about his origins and the life experiences that moulded him into the 'resilient' young man he is today.
In the wake of what has been dubbed the biggest achievement by a local artist, the success of his #FillUpTheDome campaign, many fans are keen to know who the man behind the catchy lyrics and killer dance moves is.
A quick internet search may reveal where he was born, who is dating or even where he went to school, but here are ten things that will make a die-hard fan feel they know "Nyovery" a wee bit better.
HE'S POLITICALLY HOOKED UP
He may very well be one very few things the ruling party and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) can agree on. Not quite the avid advocate for politics himself, Nyovest still manages to rally all behind him. Before the president released a statement commending the artist, the EFF posted an image of its leadership at Saturday's event.

Moreover, in March this year the premier of the North West, Supra Mahumapelo, welcomed him as the 'guest of honour' at the State of the Province Address.
His first album, Tsholofelo, is named after his youngest sibling and the second, Refiloe, after himself. It would not be a far-fetched notion that his next albums may be named after his sister, Thuto, and late brother Khotso.
He named the album after his younger sister after she gave him the R50 he needed to take a taxi to Johannesburg where he knew he had a better shot of realising his dreams - he's never looked back.
Nyovest had close ties with slain businessman Wandile Bozwana, the business owner of energy drink brand "Orgazma", who he says inspired him. The artist has been seen at many events promoting the brand in a 'not-so-discreet' way. Popular radio DJ T-bo Touch has also been linked to the brand.

'STRAIGHT OUT OF PROMOSA'
In his diss-track to hip-hop rival AKA, Cassper hollers that he is "straight outta Promosa". Always loyal to his home province of the North West, it's no wonder he mentions the small town in Potchefstroom, outside Ikageng township where he lived with his beloved grandmother.
CORPORATE NEVER LOVED US
Cassper has been in some friction with some of the biggest names in South Africa. Earlier this year he took on Super Sport for using the slogan "Slyza Tsotsi", from his track with twin DJ duo Major League. Before that he slammed Savanna, in their promotion of their dark alcoholic beverage. They used the phrase "Dark dark, Shebeleza" - sound familiar?
The posting of a video on Instagram of himself dancing hit track Slyza Tsotsi started a nationwide fad with fans all over the country posting videos of themselves doing the same. The artist's chubby frame doesn't stop him from pulling off moves that most times resemble those of the township 'Pantsula' dance. After all, Cassper has referred to himself as 'a pantsula'. He has won first place on local dance show, Jika Majika.
A LOYAL MAN
His management team is made up of childhood friends, the likes of Carpo, who he has known for over a decade; and who stuck with him through his days of trying to break into the cut-throat industry. Cassper is known for his loyalty to friends and family, but even those don't come near the loyalty he has for his Creator. Raised in a staunch Christian home, he credits his success to his faith.
'SEXY CHUBBY' WASN'T ALWAYS CHUBBY
Cassper grew up an awkward looking boy who was skinny and shy. He has since embraced his weight gain, calling himself a "sexy, chubby n***a". Although he may be trying to shed some of that cuteness - he's recently posted images of himself at the gym. Could this have anything to do with his sexy girlfriend, Boitumelo Thulo?

WHAT'S IN THE NAME?
He wasn't always 'Cassper Nyovest'. The young rapper started off as a 'Young Gun' and adopted the 'Cassper Nyovest' name when he started hanging with Motswako guru, Hip Hop Pantsula. Those close to him have said there may be a link to his favourite childhood cartoon, Casper the Friendly Ghost.
Whether you know what his favourite colour is or what is the first thing he does in the morning; the one thing most South Africans, especially those in music industry, can agree on is that this young man has shaken up the scene and promises to do more for the industry, his fans and the country as whole.
What shall we fill up next, Cassper, seeing as you've already conquered The Dome?
