JOHANNESBURG - Police brutality is once again in the spotlight after a shocking video emerged of a wounded criminal suspect being shot dead by a policeman while lying on a pavement in front of officers in Krugersdorp, on the West Rand.

Shocking images taken from CCTV footage of Khulekani Mpanza were published on the front page of the Sunday Times.

The 32-year-old, caught by the officers after an alleged attempted robbery, appears to have been shot execution style and left for dead.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid)'s Robbie Raburabu says four officers foiled a robbery at a shop in Krugersdorp two weeks ago, and the armed suspect fled on foot.

"The suspect was shot and killed by the police."

Video footage shows Mpanza being shot while he was lying wounded on a pavement.

Raburabu says Ipid is investigating the case and has recommended that steps be taken against the officers.

"In order for us to curb crime, we cannot resort to these tactics as police officers. We are a human rights society. We cannot be doing this."

Earlier this year, eight Daveyton police officers were convicted of the murder of Mozambican taxi driver Mido Macia after a video of the officers dragging him behind a police van went viral.
