JOHANNESBURG - Suspended National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega's right-hand man Solomon Makgale has been embroiled in another scandal after it emerged he met with senior police officers in a bid to destroy those perceived to be against her.

The Sunday Independent is reporting that the secret meeting took place in Durban two weeks ago.

Earlier this year, Makgale was called to Parliament to apologise for a statement he sent to the media in support of Phiyega.

The _Sunday Independent _says it's in possession of documents detailing the plot dubbed 'operation take down'.

Its purpose was to destroy Phiyega's detractors, discredit former National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele and expose apparent divisions between Lieutenant Colonel Vishnu Naidoo and Private investigator Paul O'Sullivan.

Recordings of the meeting also revealed that Makgale boasted about how police managed to destroy suspended Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) head Robert Mcbride, who was accused of doctoring the report on the illegal rendition of Zimbabweans in 2010.

Phiyega was suspended two weeks ago after President Jacob Zuma launched an inquiry into her fitness to hold office following her role in the Marikana massacre.
