Masiphumelele ‘on edge’ after activist case is postponed
Community members, who were calling for Lubabalo Vellem to be released, say they won’t sleep tonight.
CAPE TOWN - A Masiphumelele community activist arrested in connection with mob attacks, will spend another weekend behind bars.
Lubabalo Vellem made his second appearance in the Simon's Town Magistrates Court today.
Community members have reiterated they are taking the law into their own hands due to a lack of adequate policing in the area.
The case against Vellem has been postponed to next week.
That has led to threats of more violent protests in Masiphumelele.
Angry residents ran amok following Vellem's arrest more than a week ago.
Today, scores of residents chanted for hours outside the court.
They were upset by the postponement and started screaming, "We won't sleep tonight."
