CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Community Safety Department is offering a R50,000 reward for information that could lead to arrests following the murder of a police officer in Khayelitsha.

Constable Nkosiphedule Makeleni was gunned down outside a school in Harare earlier this week.

It's believed robbery was the motive.

Community safety MEC Dan Plato says, "The impact for me is looking at what has happened in the Western Cape over the last couple of months. Another cop has been gunned down. My department is offering a reward of R50,000 for anyone coming forward with information so that the police can make a very swift arrest."

Acting Western Cape Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile said a task team has been established to hunt down the cop's killers.

He was off duty at the time, but was still dressed in his police uniform.

Patekile said police won't rest until those responsible for the constable's death are behind bars.

"It's actually shocking and sad that we lost such a dedicated member within our service. He was going home from duty after serving his country during the day."

Police say following an initial investigation, it seems the perpetrators may have been after the officer's service pistol.
