83 people injured after train catches fire

JOHANNESBURG - Eighty-three people have been injured and are being treated for minor injuries after a train caught alight between Lolly and Enerdale, south of Johannesburg.

At least 102 people were onboard the train at the time of the fire.

It's understood some panicked passengers opted to jump out of the moving locomotive.

Joburg EMS Robert Mulaudzi says authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.

"A total of about 83 people were injured. Most of them were transported to various healthcare facilities within the City of Johannesburg for further medical care. The cause at this stage is still unknown; however, relevant authorities will be investigating."
